Lessons Learned in Field....

Never be afraid - Because God is with you in all things. (Psalms 91)
Plan to the best of your ability - Murphy's law will come into play you can count on it.
Emergency Help - Alert someone to where, when, what, and how long, prior to setting out on an adventure alone.
Journal - Always carry one to write down the beautiful things you encounter, your thoughts, and lessons learned.
Socks - Always wear high grade merino wool padded socks from SmartWool to decease risk of wet feet and blisters.
Boots - I have alway preferred combat boots because they are tried and tested daily around the world.
Back Packs - Kifaru, I believe makes the finest packs around. When fitted properly they are a cadillac with adaptibilty.
Water - You can never carry enough, Camelbak units are awesome and carry a water purifier in case of extended stay.
Walking Sticks - Find a solid hickory stick with a metal tip. Have not yet tested metal or composite telescoping sticks.
First Aid - Purchase the best kit you can and try to maintain a balance between weight and contents needed.
Strobe Light - This will allow drivers to see you if on a back road or if SAR is looking for you.
Energy Bars - Carry them always even on a simple day hike, events beyond your control could hold you up for days.
